Sam Cooke (1931–1964) was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of soul music.
Sam Cooke was born on January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and later moved to Chicago with his family. His early exposure to gospel music in church had a profound influence on his singing style.
Cooke began his music career in gospel, singing with the legendary gospel group The Soul Stirrers. He gained recognition for his emotive and powerful voice, contributing to gospel hits like “Touch the Hem of His Garment.”
Cooke transitioned to secular music in the late 1950s, making a mark with his smooth tenor voice. He achieved commercial success with hits like “You Send Me” (1957), which topped the charts, and “Chain Gang” (1960).
Sam Cooke was not only a talented singer but also a savvy businessman. In 1959, he founded his own record label, SAR Records, giving him greater control over his music.
Cooke’s ability to blend elements of gospel, R&B, and pop made him a crossover sensation. His distinctive voice and charismatic stage presence contributed to his popularity among a diverse audience.
In addition to “You Send Me” and “Chain Gang,” Cooke’s other notable hits include “Cupid,” “Wonderful World,” “A Change Is Gonna Come,” and “Twistin’ the Night Away.”
Inspired by the civil rights movement, Cooke used his platform to address social issues. “A Change Is Gonna Come” (1964), considered one of his masterpieces, reflects his commitment to change and justice.
Sam Cooke’s life was tragically cut short. On December 11, 1964, he was shot and killed under disputed circumstances at the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles. His death remains a subject of controversy and speculation.
Sam Cooke’s influence extends far beyond his lifetime. His contributions to soul music laid the foundation for future generations of artists. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
Sam Cooke’s impact on the music industry, his ability to transcend genres, and his commitment to social justice make him a pivotal figure in the history of American music.
